The Story Behind Paul McCartney’s First Post-Beatles Masterpiece

In 1970, Paul McCartney was depressed following The Beatles’ breakup. You can imagine him wondering where to go from here, now that the Fab Four had splintered off and finally separated. He eventually overcame his despair and began recording his first solo LP, using, by Beatles standards, a minimalist home studio setup. McCartney launched his solo career and remains a touchstone for lo-fi home recordings. It also features his first post-Beatles masterpiece, “Maybe I’m Amazed”.

Get Back

Watching him sink further into depression and self-doubt, McCartney’s wife, Linda (1941–1998), encouraged her husband to start writing again. And while playing the couple’s Steinway piano at home, “Maybe I’m Amazed” came to him. Here, he expresses gratitude to Linda while also aiming for a wider audience.

“While it’s true that Linda is the person I’m addressing, it’s also true that I’m dealing in fiction. Starting with myself, the characters who appear in my songs are imagined. I can’t state that often enough,” McCartney said in his 2021 book, The Lyrics: 1956 To The Present.

Baby, I’m amazed at the way you love me all the time,
Or maybe I’m afraid of the way I love you.
Baby, I’m amazed at the way you pulled me out of time,
You hung me on a line,
Maybe I’m amazed at the way I really need you
.

One-Man Band

He began work on the album at home but later moved to a proper studio. Returning to record at EMI Studios (Abbey Road), the track features McCartney on vocals and all instruments. Recorded in a single day, the song also features Linda on backing vocals.

Meanwhile, critics largely panned McCartney’s debut for sounding underproduced. Yet the work has been rightly reassessed since its release in 1970.

The struggle to overcome the giant shadow of a former iconic band has become a regular obstacle for many rock legends. And it took time for McCartney to convince the critics he could make it on his own. But he chose not to release any singles from the album. Instead, he emphasized the homemade vibe and non-commercial ambitions of his solo debut.

Nevertheless, it didn’t stop “Maybe I’m Amazed” from becoming a classic. And it wouldn’t be his last post-Beatles masterpiece.
