The Meaning Behind “My Body Isn’t Ready” by Sombr

On his single, “My Body Isn’t Ready”, New York pop singer Sombr details the insecurity he feels about his appearance. Born Shane Boose, Sombr offers a vulnerable take on young love, image obsession, and self-doubt. It reflects the growing pressure the 20-year-old star feels as he balances normal things like dating with the dizzying reality of fame.

Summertime Sadness

The song begins with Sombr staying at home instead of hanging out with friends. Alone, he wallows in despair, which increases the anxiety he feels around others. (Most of us know how enticing a good deep sulk can be.)

It’s the Fourth of July,
My friends wanna catch the tide.
How I wanna go, but I’ll stay home.
Wish you could stay the night,
But I am scared of the light.
I don’t want you to go
.

On TikTok, Sombr explained his motivation to write “My Body Isn’t Ready”: “i wrote this song about how every time i want someone i’m too insecure about my body to do anything about it.”

I like you, but my body isn’t ready,
I want you, but the mirror won’t let me
.

In the second verse, he reflects on leaving school and wonders if a new partner is interested in the pop star or the person. So he longs for a former relationship and a time, perhaps, before he was famous.

And now I’m out of school,
And I met someone new.
Does she just like me for the things I do?
Now I’ve got nothing to prove,
But my mind still goes back to you,
And being young and having nothing to lose
.

A Somber Persona

Boose’s stage name is a gloomy one. And the austerity from the missing “e” increases its gloominess. It gives the sense of something missing, a hole, a void. “My Body Isn’t Ready” echoes the sentiment. He aims for connection, but self-doubt forces him to stay at home, away from friends, and ultimately, away from finding love.

Instead, he gives power to the mirror. He animates it like a surreal looking glass. And what’s reflecting on him, or at him, ignites cascading layers of insecurity. Hopefully, Shane Boose can help Sombr find the light.
