The Meaning Behind “Stan” by Eminem and Its Impact on Internet Fan Culture

Eminem released “Stan” as the third single from The Marshall Mathers LP in 2000. The song became a worldwide hit. It was also acclaimed as some of the rapper’s best work. That’s due in large part to its harrowing lyrics, which proved his capabilities as a writer.

“Stan” describes an obsessive fan who writes to Eminem over the span of several months. The fan’s behavior becomes increasingly alarming, especially when Eminem doesn’t write back immediately. Each verse takes the format of a letter. The song was inspired by Eminem’s personal experience with receiving unsettling fan mail, as well as his interpretation of “Thank You” by Dido. Stan himself is a fictional character, and he and his actions in the song are not based on actual events.

“Stan” is a combination of the words “stalker” and “fan.” In the 20-plus years since the song’s release, the term has been used to describe fans, although not always negatively. In 2017, it was officially added to the Oxford English Dictionary.

“Stan” and Fan Culture

“Stan” begins from the perspective of the titular character. He’s been writing to Eminem frequently and is still awaiting a response. Instead of blaming Eminem for this, Stan assumes the letters were lost in the mail.

Dear Slim, I wrote you, but you still ain’t callin’
I left my cell, my pager, and my home phone at the bottom
I sent two letters back in autumn, you must not’ve got ’em
There probably was a problem at the post office or somethin’
Sometimes I scribble addresses too sloppy when I jot ’em.

As the verse continues, Stan speaks to Eminem as though the two men are actually friends catching up. Stan mentions Eminem’s family and shares news of his own. His girlfriend is pregnant, and his name of choice is Bonnie. The name is taken from Eminem’s song “’97 Bonnie & Clyde”, which tells the story of a man who kills his child’s mother and stashes her body in the trunk of a car before dumping it in a lake. This is a hint at what eventually becomes of Stan’s girlfriend.

But anyways, f*ck it, what’s been up, man? How’s your daughter?
My girlfriend’s pregnant too, I’m ’bout to be a father
If I have a daughter, guess what I’ma call her? I’ma name her Bonnie
I read about your Uncle Ronnie too, I’m sorry.

In the verse’s final lines, Stan declares himself Eminem’s “biggest fan.” He references some of his lesser-known work to prove it.

I know you probably hear this every day, but I’m your biggest fan
I even got the underground sh*t that you did with Skam
I got a room full of your posters and your pictures, man
I like the sh*t you did with Rawkus too, that sh*t was phat.

The song’s chorus samples Dido’s “Thank You,” and it takes on a whole new meaning in Eminem’s hands. What was originally a hopeful love song becomes darker and more sinister in “Stan.” It suggests Stan’s well-being depends on Eminem, someone he’s never actually met. And probably never will.

My tea’s gone cold, I’m wonderin’ why I
Got out of bed at all
The morning rain clouds up my window
And I can’t see at all
And even if I could, it’d all be grey
But your picture on my wall
It reminds me that it’s not so bad, it’s not so bad

Stan’s expectations become increasingly unrealistic in the song’s second verse. He’s bothered by a lack of communication from Eminem. He feels slighted after waiting outside one of the rapper’s concerts and not being acknowledged.

Dear Slim, you still ain’t called or wrote, I hope you have a chance
I ain’t mad, I just think it’s f*cked up you don’t answer fans
If you didn’t want to talk to me outside your concert, you didn’t have to
But you coulda signed an autograph for Matthew
That’s my little brother, man, he’s only six years old
We waited in the blisterin’ cold for you, for four hours, and you just said no
That’s pretty sh*tty, man, you’re like his f*ckin’ idol
He wants to be just like you, man, he likes you more than I do.

The verse also reveals more about Stan’s life and why he’s such a big fan. He had a difficult upbringing and can relate to Eminem’s songs. That helps him get through bouts of depression, something plenty of people can relate to.

See, I’m just like you in a way: I never knew my father neither
He used to always cheat on my mom and beat her
I can relate to what you’re sayin’ in your songs
So when I have a sh*tty day, I drift away and put ’em on
‘Cause I don’t really got sh*t else, so that sh*t helps when I’m depressed.

Stan’s struggles with mental health also become more obvious, as he talks about the adrenaline rush he gets from self-harm.

Sometimes I even cut myself to see how much it bleeds
It’s like adrenaline, the pain is such a sudden rush for me.

The extent of Stan’s obsession with Eminem also becomes clearer. It seems to be having an impact on Stan’s relationship with his girlfriend. Stan feels he knows Eminem better than anyone else, hinting at his idea that they’re meant to be together.

My girlfriend’s jealous ’cause I talk about you 24/7
But she don’t know you like I know you, Slim, no one does.

By the third verse, Stan is openly angry with Eminem for not responding to his letters.

Dear Mr. I’m Too Good to Call or Write My Fans
This’ll be the last package I ever send your ass
It’s been six months and still no word, I don’t deserve it?
I know you got my last two letters, I wrote the addresses on ’em perfect.

Stan’s self-destructive behavior is also escalating. He’s drunk and driving erratically, and he blames Eminem for never writing back.

So this is my cassette I’m sendin’ you, I hope you hear it
I’m in the car right now, I’m doin’ ninety on the freeway
Hey, Slim, I drank a fifth of vodka, you dare me to drive?
You know the song by Phil Collins, “In the Air of the Night”
About that guy who coulda saved that other guy from drownin’
But didn’t, then Phil saw it all, then at a show he found him?
That’s kinda how this is: You coulda rescued me from drownin’.

Stan’s hints at a romantic connection between himself and Eminem continue. This culminates in Stan’s insistence they were meant for each other. He thinks Eminem ruined their future together.

I loved you, Slim, we coulda been together, think about it
You ruined it now, I hope you can’t sleep and you dream about it
And when you dream, I hope you can’t sleep and you scream about it
I hope your conscience eats at you, and you can’t breathe without me.

In the verse’s final lines, Stan reveals he’s not the only one in the car. He’s locked his pregnant girlfriend in the trunk and intends to kill them both by driving off a bridge. He again references “’97 Bonnie & Clyde”, comparing his actions to those of the song’s narrator.

Hey, Slim, that’s my girlfriend screamin’ in the trunk
But I didn’t slit her throat, I just tied her up, see? I ain’t like you
‘Cause if she suffocates she’ll suffer more and then she’ll die too
Well, gotta go, I’m almost at the bridge now.

The perspective of the song changes in the final verse. It shifts from Stan to Eminem himself, who explains everything Stan interpreted as a slight. He’s been too busy to write back and didn’t see Stan outside his concert. He expresses interest in Stan’s life and includes an autograph as a consolation.

Dear Stan, I meant to write you sooner, but I just been busy
You said your girlfriend’s pregnant now, how far along is she?
Look, I’m really flattered you would call your daughter that
And here’s an autograph for your brother, I wrote it on a Starter cap
I’m sorry I didn’t see you at the show, I must’ve missed you
Don’t think I did that sh*t intentionally just to diss you.

But Eminem also quickly realizes Stan was troubled and needed help. Eminem rejects Stan’s more romantic suggestions. But he still expresses concern for his well-being and hopes his response is enough to help.

But what’s this sh*t you said about you like to cut your wrist too?
I say that sh*t just clownin’, dawg, come on, how f*cked up is you?
You got some issues, Stan, I think you need some counselin’
To help your ass from bouncin’ off the walls when you get down some
And what’s this sh*t about us meant to be together?
That type of sh*t’ll make me not want us to meet each other
I really think you and your girlfriend need each other
Or maybe you just need to treat her better
I hope you get to read this letter, I just hope it reaches you in time
Before you hurt yourself, I think that you’ll be doin’ just fine
If you relax a little, I’m glad I inspire you.

The verse builds to a heartbreaking ending, as Eminem realizes what happened to Stan.

Why are you so mad? Try to understand that I do want you as a fan
I just don’t want you to do some crazy sh*t
I seen this one sh*t on the news a couple weeks ago that made me sick
Some dude was drunk and drove his car over a bridge
And had his girlfriend in the trunk, and she was pregnant with his kid
And in the car, they found a tape, but they didn’t say who it was to
Come to think about it, his name was, it was you
Damn.
