The Meaning Behind “Wildflower” by Billie Eilish

“Wildflower” appears midway through Billie Eilish’s third studio album, Hit Me Hard And Soft. Co-written with her brother and producer, Finneas O’Connell, “Wildflower” finds the singer navigating a love triangle. And though love triangles are definitionally crowded—and reliably messy—Eilish seems alone in her anxiety.

Dating a Friend’s Ex

The song opens with Eilish consoling a friend after a breakup. But it soon becomes clear that the singer is now dating her friend’s ex.

Things fall apart and time breaks your heart,
I wasn’t there, but I know.
She was your girl, you showed her the world,
You fell out of love, and you both let go
.

She was crying on my shoulder, all I could do was hold her,
Only made us closer until July.
Now, I know that you love me, you don’t need to remind me,
I should put it all behind me, shouldn’t I?

Here, Eilish grapples with guilt:

But I see her in the back of my mind all the time,
Like a fever, like I’m burning alive, like a sign.
Did I cross the line?

And she grapples with comparisons:

Well, good things don’t last,
And life moves so fast.
I’d never ask who was better,
’Cause she couldn’t be,
More different from me.
Happy and free in leather.

Hey Jealousy

Though the narrator feels guilty, she’s also jealous of her friend and can’t escape thinking about the other person in this romantic entanglement.

You say no one knows you so well,
But every time you touch me, I just wonder how she felt.
Valentine’s Day, crying in the hotel,
I know you didn’t mean to hurt me, so I kept it to myself
.

She told Zane Lowe that “Wildflower” is about breaking the “girl code.” However, she flips the perspective as the song proceeds. Then she wonders whether her partner sees the ex, Eilish’s friend, when they’re together.

Finally, her brother increases the anxious mood as the track transforms from an acoustic lament into a dense power ballad. Layers of vocals cascade and crash into one another, like Eilish losing herself in an abyss of guilt, panic, and insecurity.

And I wonder, do you see her in the back of your mind,
In my eyes?
