The Oasis Track That May Be One of Noel Gallagher’s Best Songs (Hint: It’s Not “Wonderwall”)

If you were in attendance at one of the Oasis Live ’25 stadium gigs, then you’ll have noticed a set list focused primarily on the band’s first three studio albums. It seems the Gallagher brothers were in no mood for deep cuts. But among the Britpop classics lay one track that casual fans might not have been familiar with. And it may be one of Noel Gallagher’s best songs.

“Little By Little”

Following the departure of original members Paul “Bonehead” Arthurs and Paul “Guigsy” McGuigan, Oasis recorded its fourth album, Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants (2000). Enter post-Britpop Oasis.

Next came Heathen Chemistry (2002), which found new members Gem Archer and Andy Bell settling into their roles as guitarist and bassist. Here is where we’ll find one of Noel’s finest tunes.

I was at the Chicago show at Soldier Field, and when Noel played “Little By Little”, you could feel the stadium shake with the same intensity—if not more—as “Wonderwall”.

’Cause little by little,
We gave you everything you ever dreamed of.
Little by little,
The wheels of your life have slowly fallen off.
Little by little,
You have to give it all in all your life.
And all the time I just asked myself why you really here?

Noel the Philosopher

Noel’s songwriting has always revealed a kind of sunny-side-up dreamer. On hits like “Live Forever” and “Champagne Supernova”, he offered escape and hope—an antidote to angsty grunge.

Meanwhile, “Little By Little” finds him at a different vantage point. He was still relatively young then. But the foggy days of the 90s and chaos were (nearly) behind him. His band would still disintegrate. He’d still fight with Liam. But it’s what made the band’s resurrection that much more significant.

True perfection has to be imperfect,
I know that that sounds foolish but it’s true.
The day has come and now you’ll have to accept,
The life inside your head we give to you
.

Returning to the breezy August night at Soldier Field. Near the end of “Little By Little”, Noel repeats, “Why am I really here?” The crowd shouted along. By the thousands, a community of humans screamed at the sky, having no idea “why,” but nonetheless submitting to the unknowable magic of a great song.
