3 Bands That Revived Rock and Roll Throughout The Years

Throughout the years, rock and roll has always found a way. As Neil Young once sang, “rock and roll will never die.” We’ve seen rock music reinvented time and time again, branching into various genres along the way. And with that, we’ve seen bands take rock and roll back to its roots and revive sounds of the past. Here are 3 bands that revived rock and roll throughout the years.

The Black Crowes

Formed in 1984, The Black Crowes didn’t find success until their debut album was released in 1990. Shake Your Money Maker was a major revival for rock and roll, taking steps back to a sound similar to The Faces, Led Zeppelin, and the Rolling Stones in the 1970s. Their throwback swagger was captivating for the 1990s as grunge and metal were taking over. Shake Your Money Maker peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200. Two singles, a cover of Otis Redding’s “Hard To Handle,” and “She Talks To Angels,” hit No. 1 on the Mainstream Rock chart. Three other singles were released and were hits for the band. They were praised for their straightforward, blues-rock sound that revived rock music at the time.

Jet

Jet successfully blended elements of AC/DC, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones into one major debut release. Their debut, Get Born, was released in 2003. Its lead single, “Are You Gonna Be My Girl,” reached No. 3 on the Alternative Airplay chart and No. 7 on the Mainstream rock chart. The Beatles-esque third single, “Look What You’ve Done,” peaked at No. 3 on the Alternative Airplay chart. Jet’s fourth single, “Cold Hard Bitch,” was a massive success. It hit No. 1 on the Mainstream Rock Chart and No. 1 on the Alternative Airplay chart. In the early 2000s, Jet brought back bell-bottom jeans and pure rock and roll and found success with the result.

The White Stripes

Jack and Meg White took rock music back to its blues roots with their debut in 1999. After grunge had dominated the first half of the 1990s, it was unclear where rock music would go in the 2000s. The answer was a garage rock revival of the early 2000s. The White Stripes, along with The Strokes and The Black Keys, revived rock and roll for the millennium. In 2003, The White Stripes scored a massive hit with “Seven Nation Army,” which hit No. 1 on the Alternative Airplay chart and the UK Indie chart. The White Stripes transformed their sound for their albums, hitting all edges of rock, creating an ultimate revival.
