3 Pop and Rock Songs That Hit No. 1 in Multiple Decades

Music is timeless, and itโ€™s no surprise that even as trends shift and artists come and go, certain songs top the Billboard charts multiple times across decades. There can be a few different reasons for a song’s resurgence. Sometimes, it happens as a result of a song being included in the soundtrack for a hit movie, and sometimes it happens after the death of the musician. Often, streaming and apps introduce a classic song to a brand-new audience.

“All I Want For Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey

The holiday season isn’t officially underway until Mariah Carey’s hit “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is dominating the charts again. The track peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard chart when it was first released in 1994, but it re-entered the charts in 2019 and peaked at No. 1. It has continued to do so every year since, re-entering and topping the charts for six consecutive years. In December of 2025, it broke the record for the longest-running No. 1, with 20 consecutive weeks at the top. Its massive success has made it the best-selling Christmas song by a female artist in the US.

Songfacts: All I Want For Christmas Is You | Mariah Carey

Album:Merry Christmas [1994]

Until “All I Want For Christmas Is You” reached the top in 2019, the only Christmas song to hit #1 in America was “The Chipmunk Song” in 1958, a novelty number where those lovable rodents eagerly await the holiday. The third festive song to summit that mountain was another song from 1958: “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” by Brenda Lee in 2023, revived by the release of a music video.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen

Queen’s epic “Bohemian Rhapsody” was a hit when it was first released in 1975. But it’s also topped the charts in the decades since. Over in the UK, it topped the Singles Chart for nine weeks. Then it re-entered the chart in 1991, after frontman Freddie Mercury’s death. In the US, it peaked at No. 9 in 1976, then re-entered the charts at No. 2 in 1992 after the release of Wayne’s World. That film featured the song in a scene where the characters headbang while listening to it. The song re-entered the charts again in 2018, after the success of the biopic Bohemian Rhapsody.

“Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac

Fleetwood Mac’s album Rumours is known not just for being a pretty much perfect classic rock album. It is also known for the major drama happening behind the scenes as the membersโ€™ personal lives and relationships with each other imploded. One of the many hit singles to come from the album was “Dreams”. That track was written by Stevie Nicks and topped the charts in 1977. The song then went viral on TikTok in 2020, leading to it re-entering the charts. And while it didnโ€™t make it to No. 1, it did come pretty close at No. 2.
