In honor of the 50th season of reality show Survivor, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has released a cover of David Bowie’s “Heroes,” available now on streaming platforms.
Billie Joe’s youngest son, Jakob, also appears on the song. The track has been featured in a promo for the upcoming season and debuted exclusively by The Hollywood Reporter. The cover is faithful to Bowie’s original, with similar instrumentation, while both Armstrongs alternate vocal duties. It’s also the latest example of renewed appreciation for “Heroes”. The song was featured in the finale for Netflix’s hit original series Stranger Things, leading to a nearly 500% spike in streams. The song was first released in 1977 as the lead single from Bowie’s album of the same name. The lyrics of the tune tell the story of two lovers on opposite sides of the Berlin Wall.
“Heroes” Is Just One of Many Covers That Billie Joe Armstrong Has Taken On
Billie Joe has also put his spin on plenty of classic songs over the years, including other Bowie favorites. Back in 2018, he formed a cover band called The Coverups. During the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, he began a series called “No Fun Mondays,” which he eventually turned into a compilation album. Most recently, he released his take on The Beach Boys’ “I Get Around” as a nod to Brian Wilson in 2025, following his tragic passing. Armstrong has also performed with his sons previously, including on a live cover of “I Think We’re Alone Now” by Tommy James And The Shondells back in 2020.
Jakob’s work with Billie Joe isn’t his first foray into music. He previously released music under the moniker Jakob Danger and has performed with the band Ultra Q. His older brother, Joey, has also followed in their father’s footsteps. He previously served as the drummer for the band SWMRS.
Season 50 of Survivor will bring back 24 previous competitors and will feature a number of celebrity guests, including Zac Brown, Billie Eilish, Mr. Beast, and Jimmy Fallon, and will premiere on February 25. Green Day, meanwhile, is slated to play at the opening ceremony for the Super Bowl.
