In 2022, the hardcore punk band Turnstile cut ties with co-founding member and guitarist Brady Ebert. Rolling Stone has reported that this was due to a consistent pattern of harmful behavior that was affecting the group. Since Ebert was released from the group, he then co-founded the band S.E.T. The new group released their debut album in March, titled Self-Evident Truth. Following remarks against his former bandmates in Turnstile, Ebert was let go from S.E.T in February. This was just before the release of the debut album in March. Members of Turnstile sought to place peace orders on Ebert, which were denied by a Maryland judge.
On March 29, police and fire responded to reports of a person struck by a vehicle. A press release from the Montgomery County Police Department states: “The investigation has revealed that Ebert was involved in an argument with his 78-year-old neighbor in the neighbor’s driveway. During the incident, and for reasons still under investigation, Ebert struck the victim with his 2001 Buick before leaving the scene without contacting 9-1-1 or providing aid. The victim was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries, including a broken leg.” Using surveillance footage, police issued a warrant for Ebert’s arrest. Ebert was then arrested on March 31 and is being held without bond.
The victim was lead singer Brendan Yates’ father, William Yates, who survived the incident. The band told Rolling Stone that Yates has “successfully undergone surgery, and we’re hoping for the best possible outcome in his recovery.”
Turnstile Has Issued a Statement on the Incident
In a statement released to Rolling Stone, Turnstile has stated: “Turnstile cut ties with Brady Ebert in 2022 in response to a consistent pattern of harmful behavior affecting himself, the band, and the community. After exhausting every available resource to support his access to help and recovery, a boundary ultimately had to be set when healthy communication was no longer possible, and he began threatening violence.”
The band went on to say, “In the years since, his baseless tirades have continued in public. We never addressed it. We chose to protect his privacy and the circumstances around his departure, even when he did nothing to be deserving of that protection. Over the past few months, his threats have only escalated further. … We have no language left for Brady. Please respect our privacy at this time.”
Turnstile has made waves in the hardcore punk community in recent years. They have received a total of 8 Grammy nominations, starting with their 2023 album Glow On. At the 2026 Grammy Awards, Turnstile won their first two Grammy Awards. One for Best Metal Performance for their song “Birds”, and another for Best Rock Album for their 2025 release Never Enough. The band has seen significant success following Ebert’s firing in 2022.
