Harry Styles Navigates the Tension Between Romance and Doubt in “Coming Up Roses”

In “Coming Up Roses”, Harry Styles navigates the tension between saving a romance and sensing its collapse. Written by Styles and produced by Kid Harpoon, the track teems with the uncertainty of a short-lived relationship, with plucky strings and all the hope and doubt of a last dance.

Does That Mean We’re Not Aligned?

Even when relationships are cruising along, anxiety tends to lurk around dark corners. Styles listens to his partner’s fears. And maybe their history together will be enough to keep things from falling apart. Or maybe it won’t.

Tell me your fears,
I’ve turned back the clocks, it’s that time of year.
If we stay the course, we could get it right,
But I’m not devoid of an appetite.
And everything seems to be coming up roses,
But I’m scared if we’re both right.
Does that mean we’re not aligned?

They return to the early days of partying and flirting. The lightness one feels when there’s nothing left to lose. Yet, with the reassurance that they are going home together.

Just for tonight, let’s go hangover chasing,
And I’ll talk your ear off about why it’s safe.
As I fumble my words and fall flat on my face through the truth.
Just say the word and we’ll take up the test,
Where we flirt with the bad ones and skip all the rest.
But we see out the night with your head on my chest, me and you
.

I’m Feeling Guilty

They may not share the same goals, and this makes him feel guilty. Still, he tries to manage this person’s life.

But as the orchestra rises and falls, a space is created. Styles completes the tune by humming to himself like it’s the end of a sad film and the picture—and possibly the romance—fades to black.

Now I see your tears on account of my wants,
And now it appears that I’m feeling guilty and worried, dear.
That you think that I might not want you here.
Does all of this seem to be bringing us closer?
Or am I back-seating your life?
Judging while you drive?
