A long-lost film following singer George Michael on his 1988 Faith tour will be released later this year.
The film, titled George Michael: The Faith Tour, will include previously unseen footage shot over two nights of Michael’s concerts at Bercy Arena in Paris, at the height of his solo career, when he was just 24. The 35mm footage was shot by 14 cameras and was thought to have been lost, but it has since been discovered and was restored and remastered.
George Michael: The Faith Tour will be accompanied by Finding Faith, a short film by photographer Mary McCartney, Paul McCartney’s daughter, which will discuss the tour’s cultural impact. Finding Faith will also feature a previously unheard interview from Michael, previously unseen photos taken by photographer Herb Ritts, and behind-the-scenes footage of the “Faith” music video.
The film will be released in theaters worldwide by George Michael Entertainment in collaboration with Mercury Studios and Sony Music Entertainment, but no release dates have been announced. The film was directed by Andy Morahan and David Austin, who frequently collaborated with Michael. Austin was also a friend of Michael’s who has been managing the singer’s estate since his death.
The film will be accompanied by an 18-track live album called The Faith Tour, consisting of previously unheard songs performed by Michael and recorded during the tour. A release date has not been announced.
Michael released Faith in 1987, and the album was almost entirely written, produced, and performed by Michael himself. It went on to become one of the biggest of the ’80s, with four hit singlesโ”Faith,” “Father Figure,” “One More Try,” and “Monkey”โmaking him the only British male solo artist ever to have four No. 1 singles from the same album on the Billboard Hot 100. Faith also sold over 25 million copies sold worldwide and won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Michael supported the release with the Faith Tour, his first as a solo artist, which spanned over 100 shows across 16 countries and featured choreography by Paula Abdul.
Michael died in in 2016 at age 53.
