Modest Mouse Announces New Album, ‘An Eraser and a Maze’

Modest Mouse have announced their eighth studio album, An Eraser and a Maze, will be released this summer.

The band shared the announcement, as well as the album’s artwork, in an Instagram post. They have released a new single and the album’s opening track, “Picking Dragons’ Pockets.”

An Eraser and a Maze was originally intended to be an EP for frontman Isaac Brock’s side project, Ugly Casanova, but Brock decided to use the material for Modest Mouse instead. He also served as the album’s producer. Musically, the album will reportedly capture every era of the band.

“For this one, I turned off my filter and just let it all happen,” Brock wrote in a statement. “Even though every musician says that when they put out a record. Thoughts, emotions, feelings, all that stuffโ€ฆ you’re like the soup, and it’s not always easy to pick out the ingredients. I don’t dwell on things much. I don’t grieve much. I’m not sure I’m a person. I feel like I should have more feelings than I do. But then, you know, I’ll sing stuff. And I’m like, ‘Oh, there it is. It’s in there.’”

An Eraser and a Maze is Modest Mouse’s first independent release in nearly 30 yearsโ€”they’ve parted ways with longtime label Epic Records. Instead, the album will be released through Glacial Pace Recordings, an imprint of Virgin Records founded by Brock.

The band also shared additional headlining tour dates, keeping them on the road through the fall. Their full touring schedule includes some festival appearances, as well as a spot opening for My Chemical Romance.

Modest Mouse previously shared the new song “Look How Far…” back in March, featuring former Sleater-Kinney drummer Janet Weiss. The track was their first release in five years.

Their last album, The Golden Casket, was released in 2021. An Eraser and a Maze is due out June 5. It is currently available for pre-order on both vinyl and CD. A presale for the newly announced tour dates is currently underway, and the sale to the general public begins Friday, April 24, at 10 a.m. local time.
