Iconic rock band the Rolling Stones have announced their 25th studio album, Foreign Tongues.
The band also shared the new single “In the Stars.” They previously shared the opening track, “Rough and Twisted,” as a white-label vinyl exclusive available at independent record stores as part of a grassroots campaign under the pseudonym the Cockroaches.
The Rolling Stones previewed Foreign Tongues for fans earlier this week at an event in New York City, hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien.
“I think this is the one, after years of toiling in obscurity,” O’Brien joked. “This is their time.”
The wide-ranging discussion also addressed the band’s creativity and the diverse sound of Foreign Tongues, as well as its notable guest appearances. The album will feature Paul McCartney, The Cure’s Robert Smith, Steve Winwood, and Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers, as well as the final song the band recorded with drummer Charlie Watts before his death in 2021. The Rolling Stones recorded the album over the course of a month in London.
“I love doing these recording sessions in London at Metropolis,” Mick Jagger said in a statement. “”It was a very intense few weeks recording Foreign Tongues. We had 14 great tracks and we went as fast as we could. I like the room there as it’s not too big so you can feel the passion in the room from everyone.”
Guitarist Ronnie Wood added, “”The atmosphere in the room was so creative, and the whole band was on top form throughout the whole process. Very often we nailed it on the first take. I hope everyone loves it.”
Jagger, Wood, and bandmate Keith Richards will each be guests on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon through Friday, May 8.
The Rolling Stones released their last album, Hackney Diamonds, in 2023, which was their first album of new, original material in nearly 20 years and their first album since Watts’ death. Both Foreign Tongues and Hackney Diamonds were produced by Andrew Watt.
Foreign Tongues will be released on July 10 via Capitol Records and is currently available for pre-order on CD and vinyl. “In the Stars” is currently available digitally and will be followed by a physical release on Friday, May 15.
