Starting in September, Sleater-Kinney and Liz Phair will co-headline a tour. The Flannel And The Fury Tour brings together two top alternative rock acts of the 1990s, fueling 90s nostalgia. The two acts have underground cult followings, and it marks their first time touring together.
Sleater-Kinney’s most recent studio album, Little Rope, was released on January 19, 2024. It marked the group’s eleventh studio album. Their debut self-titled album came out in 1995, and they followed up with Call The Doctor in 1996 and Dig Me Out in 1997. Sleater-Kinney has been a fixture in the Olympia, Washington, alternative scene since the mid-1990s. Brownstein also co-starred in the sketch comedy series Portlandia with Fred Armisen for eight seasons. Brownstein and Armisen have also been performing as a Ramones cover band called The Return of Jackie and Judy. The cover band will perform at the 2026 CBGB’s Festival in New York.
Liz Phair is a singer-songwriter from the Chicago music scene. She started recording cassette demos under the name Girly-Sound in the early 90s, before embarking on a solo career with her own name. Phair’s debut studio album, Exile In Guyville, was released in 1993. It received wide acclaim and has since been added to Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. She earned a Grammy Award nomination for her second album, Whip-Smart, in the category of Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. In 2003, Liz Phair’s fourth studio album, titled Liz Phair, featured a more polished approach. The album debuted at No. 27 on the Billboard 200. It contained Phair’s only Top 40 hit “Why Can’t I?”, which peaked at No. 32 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Sleater-Kinney and Liz Phair Spoke on the Upcoming Tour in a Press Release
In a press release through Pitchfork, Liz Phair stated, “The Flannel and The Fury is a nod to 1990s alt-rock culture and the female-fronted bands who staked their claim to center stage in a male-dominated music industry. Sleater-Kinney and I both cut our teeth in the early Riot Girl scene. Itโs been a dream of mine ever since to bring our music and our fans together for one night of reckless hope and musical splendor. Weโll see you there!”
Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker of Sleater-Kinney also added, “For those of us who listened toย Exile in Guyvilleย on repeat in 1993, Liz Phair has always been a leader and a truth-sayer for the female experience. Sheโs a legend and a stone-cold classic; what a thrill to share the stage with one of our biggest inspirationsโwe canโt wait to tear it up with her. See you soon!”
The tour kicks off on September 6, 2026, at The Magnolia in El Cajon, California. On September 8, the tour stops at The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. The next evening, the tour moves over to Berkeley, CA, to perform at the other Greek Theatre. Other stops on the tour include Denver, Chicago, and Brooklyn, before wrapping up in Boston, MA, on September 21, 2026.
