Few artists have taken MySpace vibes and London’s rave scene to greater heights than Charli XCX. The British superstar helped lift underground sounds into the mainstream and, in doing so, utterly transformed pop music with swaggering experimentalism. And if one wanted to define “swaggering” with a new synonym, one might use “brat.”
The title of Charli’s sixth studio album dominated pop culture, ignited “Brat summer” in 2024, and had half the internet creating green/lowercase memes using the online Brat generator. But the heart of Brat is an acceptance of the messy, the disheveled, the imperfect. And speaking of messy imperfections, on her song, “Sympathy Is A Knife”, Charli describes self-doubt and the pity from others she rejects.
Behind the Lyrics
Though Charli’s blockbuster album Brat became a culture-shifting statement on confidence, “Sympathy Is A Knife” reveals a snapshot of the pop star’s insecurity.
I don’t wanna share this space,
I don’t wanna force a smile.
This one girl taps my insecurities,
Don’t know if it’s real or if I’m spiraling.
Here, Charli’s husband, George Daniel, drummer and producer of the band The 1975, tries to reason with her. But the anxiety gives Charli a clarity she’s convinced he lacks.
One voice tells me that they laugh,
George says I’m just paranoid,
Says he just don’t see it, he’s so naïve,
I’m embarrassed to have it, but need the sympathy.
Wild Narratives
“People are gonna think what they want to think. That song is about me and my feelings and my anxiety and the way my brain creates narratives and stories in my head when I feel insecure and how I don’t want to be in those situations physically when I feel self-doubt,” she told Vulture.
Wild voice tearing me apart,
I’m so apprehensive now.
Don’t wanna see her backstage at my boyfriend’s show,
Fingers crossed behind my back, I hope they break up quick.
Yet, she’s not interested in sympathy. The pity feels like a weapon. And however well-intentioned the consolations may be, Charli sees them as a way to further her despair. Now they pity her, poor Charli. She’d just rather they not.
All this sympathy is just a knife
Why I can’t even grit my teeth and lie.
