The Meaning Behind the Surprisingly Upbeat Tale of Heartbreak in “Potential” by Sombr

Sombr has released three new singles in 2026. Among those, the synth-pop single “Potential” was released on April 17, 2026. Sombr debuted the new single at Coachella in April. It has peaked at No. 12 on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart since its release. Sombr’s sophomore album hasn’t been officially announced, but is expected to follow three new singles.

“Potential” is about a relationship ending too soon and the narrator’s struggle to accept it. The first verse indicates how comfortable the two were around each other. This is referenced in the opening lines about her lack of makeup around him. “Every time we’d wake up, I got to see you with no makeup / Yeah, you hated how it looked off / But, baby, that’s just how you grew up.” Looking back on this moment of trust and comfort fuels his feelings of discontent after the breakup. There was potential together that will never be fully realized.

“We Had Potential, It Makes Me Mental”

It can be hard to move on from a relationship such as this. The little things, such as waking up together and exposing vulnerability, are difficult to forget. In the second verse, Sombr mentions his rise to fame shortly after. He indicates that this was his last relationship before his career took off.

“It was a difficult breakup / But I wrote some songs that got me famous / Sometimes I think about what it costs / You were the last one that I could trust.” Despite accomplishments in his career, he’s still thinking about the lost love. It’s driving him crazy, and he’s having trouble moving on. “And when I fall, I’m blamin’ you / That doesn’t make it your fault, but it still makes it true.”

In April, a music video was released for the single. It’s a Bonnie And Clyde-inspired story, starring actors Madeline Argy, Gavin Casalegno, and Sombr. Interwoven throughout the video are scenes of ballet dancers in a museum, which represent what the relationship could’ve been. It turns into a failed heist attempt at the museum, symbolic of the failed relationship in the song’s lyrics.

Sombr is taken by a prehistoric stone, titled “The Lovers”. It shows a couple painted in red, holding hands, and reminds Sombr of what this relationship could be. Suddenly, alarms are set off, and the police arrive. It’s too late, and it’s over for the two as they’re arrested. They had potential, but they blew it.
