Boston Lead Singer, Tommy DeCarlo, Dead at 60 After Battle With Cancer

Tommy DeCarlo saw his dreams come true when he became the lead singer of the classic rock band Boston. DeCarlo had been a fan of the band since he was 12 years old. In March 2007, original lead singer Brad Delp tragically took his own life, and it inspired DeCarlo to write and record a song dedicated to his favorite singer. His daughter suggested that he post the song on MySpace, where it gained some traction. Shortly after, he sent his song to Boston’s management. Guitarist and Boston mastermind Tom Scholz reached out to DeCarlo, who was working at a Home Depot at the time. Scholz was impressed by DeCarlo’s cover of “Don’t Look Back,” and he was recruited to continue the band’s legacy. He first performed with the group at a tribute concert for Brad Delp.

In a strange coincidence, DeCarlo’s death on March 9 falls on the same day as Brad Delp’s death 19 years earlier. DeCarlo was diagnosed with brain cancer in September 2025. The band then cancelled their remaining 2025 tour dates so DeCarlo could focus on his health.

Tommy DeCarloโ€™s Family and Former Bandmates Paid Tribute on Social Media

DeCarlo’s family released a statement on social media following his death.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our dad, Tommy DeCarlo, on Monday, March 9, 2026. After being diagnosed with brain cancer last September, he fought with incredible strength and courage right up until the very end. During this difficult time, we kindly ask that friends and fans respect our family’s privacy as we grieve and support one another. Rest in peace, Dad. With love, Annie, Talia, and Tommy Jr.”

Boston guitarist Tom Scholz said in a statement that DeCarlo was “a competitive athlete and yet a gentle soul who is remembered by his son and many others as a sweet man who did not deserve to be cut down at such a young age. It’s not surprising that one of his favorite Boston songs to sing was ‘To Be A Man.’”

Scholz went on to say, “While many people will remember Tommy giving his audience amazing live performances, I will remember him as the incredible lead singer who appeared out of nowhere to rescue Boston in 2007, and he gave all of us with the band 10 additional years of performing our most memorable live shows. Rest in peace, Tommy, you did what it took to be a man.”

Boston released one album with DeCarlo. Life, Love & Hope was released on December 3, 2013, marking the band’s first studio album in eleven years. The album peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard US Independent Albums chart. It reached No. 5 on the US Top Rock Albums chart. Tommy DeCarlo spent nearly 20 years with his dream job, touring and singing with his favorite band.
