The Meaning Behind “Rattle The Cage” by Nickelback Featuring John 5 as the Band Enters a New Chapter

Nickelback has announced their upcoming eleventh studio album. Everything Under The Sun will be released on October 30, 2026. It has been preceded by a new single, titled “Rattle The Cage”, released on July 14. It’s the Canadian rock band’s first release since 2023. The new single features guitarist John 5, who is currently a member of Mötley Crüe. John 5 is known for his previous work with Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson.

This marks a new chapter for Nickelback. Their 2023 Netflix documentary Hate To Love: Nickelback brushed off negativity geared towards the band throughout the years. It reaffirmed their legacy as they embarked on a world tour soon after, shattering attendance records across the globe.

“Rattle The Cage” is an anthem about the rush you feel during a high-energy live performance. The lyrics take you to the audience in the first verse, referred to as the human ocean. They also refer to the devil horns hand gesture, popularized by Ronnie James Dio in the 1980s. It’s a common gesture at rock performances.

Welcome to the human ocean
Crowd starts moving in slow motion
What you feel is what you came for
Devil horns what your hand was made for
.

The Band Calls on You To Let Out Frustrations

The intention is to let everything out at the high-energy rock performance. Your anger, frustrations, whatever you’re going through—their concert is the place to let it out. It’s a call and response with the crowd.

Catch your breath
A new beginning
There’s no rest once the room starts spinning
Letting go of your frustration
Every form of your aggravation
.

Hey you
We don’t care what you do
This is where you come to get out what you’re going through
And time will tell how long someone can yell
Scream until we know that they can hear us down in hell
