Songfacts®:

  • "Pink Venom" is a fiery hip-hop-flavored track that celebrates the contradictions at the heart of Blackpink. Rosé compares herself (in Korean) to a "venomous flower" in the pre-chorus. On the hook Lisa and Jennie also portray themselves as musical femme fatales.

Straight to ya dome like ah, ah, ah
    Taste that pink venom

The two girls liken themselves and their music to an irresistible surge of pleasure that goes straight to your head like a drug.
  • "Pink Venom" contains several interpolations.

    BLACKPINK, BLACKPINK
    BLACKPINK, BLACKPINK

The girls' chant intro nods to Snoop Dogg's chant melody on the chorus of "I Wanna Rock."

Jennie opens the first verse with a reference to Chanel founder Coco Chanel. The BlackPink artist has been Chanel's brand ambassador since 2018.

Kick in the door, waving the coco

Jennie plays on a line from the Notorious B.I.G.'s Kick In The Door."

Kick in the door, wavin' the .44

Later, Lisa briefly sings the lyrics and melody to a line in Rihanna's 2005 debut single, "Pon De Replay":

One by one, then two by two
  • The K-pop group released "Pink Venom" on August 19, 2022 as the first single from their second studio album, Born Pink. "Since our album's title is Born Pink, we wanted to relay our identity in the song as much as we could," Jennie said. "Since 'pink' and 'venom' have contradicting images, we thought they were kind of reminiscent of us... we are named Blackpink and contradiction is our charm - we wanted to show that. It's pink venom, a lovely poison, it's words that most express us."
  • YG Entertainment in-house producer and frequent Blackpink collaborator Teddy Park wrote the bilingual song with Jeong "24" Hun-seol, R.Tee, Danny Chung and IDO. Teddy Park also created the Eastern hip-pop beat, which features a traditional Korean string instrument called a geomungo.

"I remember the first time I listened to the song in the studio; it was really new and sounds we never attempted before," Rosé shared. "I just really wanted to record the song right away and show our performance."
  • The music video features several elaborate setups, such as a raging sandstorm during dance scenes and a fire-lit cave where Rosé plays the guitar. The clip's choreography includes Blackpink's TikTok-ready "fang dance."

"We visualized a fang with our hands which most intuitively expresses the 'Pink Venom' concept; everybody can follow it easily," said Lisa. "There's an impactful dance break at the end, and the set is just amazing."
  • BlackPink became the first K-pop group to debut at the summit of Australia's singles chart when "Pink Venom" blasted in at the summit. It usurped the #2 start for BTS' "Dynamite."
  • Blackpink performed "Pink Venom" live for the first time on Seoul Broadcasting System's Inkigayo on August 28, 2022. When Blackpink performed the track at the MTV VMAs the same day, they became the first female K-pop group in history to do so.
  • BlackPink became the first K-pop girl group to land a #1 album in the US when Born Pink debuted at the top spot. Born Pink also was the first album by a K-pop female act to reach the summit on the UK albums chart. They previously peaked at #2 in both countries in 2020 with The Album.

No girl group of any nationality had previously simultaneously topped the albums charts in the US and UK since Destiny's Child's Survivor in 2001.
  • "Pink Venom" took Best Choreography at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards, where Blackpink also won for Group of the Year.
