Songfacts®:

  • Lauren Daigle is a contemporary Christian music singer from Lafayette, Louisiana. She enrolled at Louisiana State University to pursue a degree in Child and Family Studies, but music was always on her agenda and Daigle landed a record deal with Centricity Music.

This song, which Daigle wrote with Michael Farren (Big Daddy Weave's "Every Time I Breathe," Michael W. Smith's "Welcome Home"), was her first #1 on Billboard's Hot Christian Songs chart. The track was produced by Paul Mabury (Brooke Fraser, Hillsong, One Sonic Society).
  • When Daigle wrote the song with Michael Farren, she was going through a time of significant loss, which catapulted her on a quest for clarity. She explained: "My grandfather had just passed away and he and I were super close. When I lived in Baton Rouge and went to LSU, I lived with him. He was so much fun and one of the most influential men in my life. He was the first person really close to me that I had lost."

"I was telling Michael Farren about it and he told me about a book he was reading by a man who once worked for Mother Teresa. Upon arriving, she said, 'Is there anything I can do for you? And he said, 'Yes, you can pray for me. You can pray that I have clarity.' And she said, 'No, I am not going to pray that you have clarity because clarity is the last thing that's holding you back.' He said, 'Mother Teresa what are you talking about? You have had clarity your whole life.' She said, 'No, I've never had clarity. I've only had trust.' When I heard that, I knew it was not about seeing the big picture. It's about trusting that the Lord is going to be there for you."
  • The track's success is ironic as it was the song that Daigle was most reluctant to put on How Can it Be. She recalled to Billboard magazine:

"I remember saying, 'I'm not a fan of this one so much,' and they were like, 'It'll be fine, we'll make it cool, don't worry.'

When I played the record for my grandmother, she said, 'Oh, that's my favorite song.' So I was like, if this song is on the record just for her, it's worth it. Then when the label was like, 'We want to make it a single,' I was like, 'Have you lost your mind?'

But all these people started writing in, saying, 'I didn't know what I needed, but I played this song all through my chemo and now I'm healed,' or 'We played this song the entire time my sister was in the hospital'... It's kind of crazy because the one thing that I'd so longed for, for my grandfather, is what's coming through this song. Now, I enjoy it."
