Songfacts®:

  • The Original High was executive produced by Max Martin and Shellback, the pair responsible for co-writing and producing Lambert's singles "Whataya Want From Me" and "If I Had You."

It was Lambert's demo for this song that persuaded the Swedish hit-making duo to work with the American Idol finalist again. He told Schön! Magazine: "Before it all started and I had a demo called 'The Original High' that I actually played for them. They said 'this is cool, this is not the direction we would expect you to go in but that's why we want to do it. We want to do something unexpected, we want to shift the idea of who you are as an artist a little bit and surprise people."
