Songfacts®:

  • The song's title is a reference to Winona Ryder's character in the macabre teen comedy Heathers. Frontman Davey Havok has admired Winona Ryder for a long time - in AFI's 2000 song "The Despair Factor," he recites a line that the actress said in the movie Beetlejuice: "My whole life is a darkroom! One ... big ... dark ... room."
  • In a 2009 interview with The Aquarian, Havok discussed the meaning of the song, saying it "touches on a misconception and a slight obsession."

"I thought the title really worked with that and lyrically represented that sort of mindset, where you have Veronica Sawyer in the film and she's infallible and [she has] murdered," he explained. "That's the message I was trying to confront and I enjoy the film, so it's part an homage."
  • The obsession with Ryder that Havok expresses in the song aligns with one of the main themes of Crash Love, which, according to an original press release for the album, found Havok "delving into examination and dissection of celebrity culture from within and without."
  • In a 2025 episode of the HardLore podcast, Havok said he wanted "Veronica Sawyer Smokes" to be released as a single, but the radio rep for AFI's label didn't choose it for promotion.
