Songfacts®:

  • Seven-piece Texan group Alpha Rev meld classical instrumentation with rock. They were formed in 2005 by singer-songwriter Casey McPherson after the break-up of his previous band Endochine. The band also comprises Derek Dunivan (guitar), Tommy Roalson (drums), Dave Wiley (cello), Alex Dunlap (bass), Brian Lewis Batch (violin) and Derek Morris (keyboards). Alpha Rev released a debut indie CD, The Greatest Thing I Ever Learned in 2007 and after signing with Hollywood, they recorded their debut major label record, New Morning at New York's Avatar Studios. This is the lead single from the album.
  • Alex Dunlop explained the band's name to Spinner UK: "Half-Greek, half-Latin - the words pulled together loosely mean 'the beginning of something new.' Casey came up with the name, and said it well in a recent interview: 'It's that feeling when the light bulb goes off - that instant of inspiration and redemption... those moments that keep us going forward.'"
  • The song is included on the soundtrack of the Miley Cyrus movie, The Last Song. It also was featured during Season 4 of ABC's Brothers & Sisters.
  • The song's music video was filmed in the band's hometown of Austin, Texas. It was helmed by Mark Pellington, who directed the films Arlington Road and The Mothman Prophecies as well as music videos for Bruce Springsteen, U2, Pearl Jam and The Foo Fighters. Though Pellington rarely accepts music video assignments, the director has said he was deeply inspired by the intensity of Alpha Rev's music and lobbied to work with the band.
