Songfacts®:

  • Mad About You was an American sitcom that aired on NBC from September 23, 1992 to May 24, 1999. The show starred Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt as a newly married couple in New York City. "Final Frontier" is its theme song, which was composed by Reiser and Don Was.
  • The theme was originally performed by Andrew Gold, but a version performed by Anita Baker made its debut midway through the 1997 season and was used for the rest of the show's run. Gold also sung and wrote "Thank You For Being A Friend," the theme song for Golden Girls.
  • Gold has an impressive musical pedigree: his mother is singer Marni Nixon, who provided the singing voice for numerous well-known actresses, notably Natalie Wood in West Side Story, Deborah Kerr in The King and I and Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady. His father was Ernest Gold, the Academy Award-winning composer for the movie Exodus.
  • A unique distinction held by Gold is that he was the first human voice ever "heard" on Mars, when "Final Frontier" was used as the wake-up call for the Mars Pathfinder space probe in 1996.
