Songfacts®:

  • Aqualung is Matthew Hales, an English singer-songwriter, musician and record producer. He's best known for his 2002 solo hit "Strange and Beautiful (I'll Put a Spell on You)" and production work for the likes of Lianne La Havas, Tom Chaplin and Paloma Faith. Hales recorded this empty nest song for his seventh solo album, Dead Letters.
  • The song is about Hales' oldest son leaving home, feeling confident and ready for anything.

    But you're a soldier, now
    Champion of the world
    Oh, now, now
Oh now, filling in your feathers
    Always dreaming of the sky
    Just don't look down

Hales wrote "Champion Of The World" when his son, having completed his A-levels, started exploring the planet. "He thinks he's ready for the whole world," Hales told The Sun. "He's maybe not quite as ready as he thinks he is, but we have to let him find out for himself."
  • Matthew Hales composed the Dead Letters album after moving back from Los Angeles to his native United Kingdom. Back home, he was reunited with his childhood piano.
