Songfacts®:

  • Ateez is a South Korean boy band formed by KQ Entertainment in 2018. The group comprises eight members: Hongjoong, Seonghwa, Yunho, Yeosang, San, Mingi, Wooyoung and Jongho. By the time Golden Hour: Part.3 arrived in 2025 (their 12th mini-album), Ateez had already conquered massive stadiums, amassed a global fanbase, and topped the US albums chart.

And then they dropped "Lemon Drop."

The album's focus single, the song is sleek, minimal, a little flirty, and built for sweltering nights and sweet-and-sour daydreams. The song feels like a long exhale after a heatwave, with just enough edge to keep you from melting.
  • "Lemon Drop" isn't just the name of Ateez's sultry summer single - it's also a cocktail. Invented in the 1970s at Henry Africa's bar in San Francisco, the drink is a vodka-based confection: sweet, sour, citrusy, and usually served in a martini glass with a sugared rim. Technically, it's more of a descendant of the classic daisy or white lady than a proper martini, but it has ambitions. Much like Ateez.

Mingi told Apple Music: "You'll probably notice the refreshing sweetness of a lemon drop cocktail in this track, but I think you'll also feel a summer that's more than just blue."
  • Musically, "Lemon Drop" leans into breezy R&B and hip-hop territory. Credit for that goes to the songwriting team of Ateez's Hongjoong and Mingi, Eden, BL$$D, Maddox, Peperoni, OLIV, and Ollounder.

Eden is something of a mythical figure in Ateez-world. Often called "the father of Ateez's music," he's the head of Edenary, a rare in-house K-pop production team. In an industry that often outsources songwriting, Edenary crafts nearly all of Ateez's catalogue, creating a coherent sound that's distinctly theirs – cinematic and hard-hitting with a genre-bending intensity. In the case of "Lemon Drop" they trade in their usual thunder for a sun-drenched groove: R&B-tinged and lightly flirtatious with a twist of melancholy.
  • And now the chart stuff: On June 24, 2025, Ateez made history when "Lemon Drop" debuted at #69 on the Billboard Hot 100. This made them only the third K-pop boy band ever to crack the Hot 100, joining the exclusive club occupied by BTS and Stray Kids.
  • Pistol Annies, the country supergroup formed by Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe, and Angaleena Presley, also released a song titled "Lemon Drop" in 2011. While Ateez's "Lemon Drop" is a cocktail you sip on a rooftop, probably in Seoul or Ibiza, Pistol Annies' "Lemon Drop" is a different beast entirely. Their "Lemon Drop" isn't a cocktail - it's a metaphor for hanging on to hope when life gives you lemons.
