Songfacts®:

  • "I Fell in Love With the Devil" is an opulent, string-laden pop ballad in which Avril Lavigne sings about ending a toxic relationship.

    Someone send me an angel
    To lend me a halo
I fell in love with the Devil
Please, save me from this hell

Lavigne told Genius: "The lyrics, 'Please save me from this hell' basically means, help me get out of this nightmare. I need to get out of this spider web that I'm caught up in and break free and have positive, healthy relationship."
  • Lavigne wrote the song and co-produced it alongside Chris Baseford. The producer also worked with Lavigne's ex, Chad Kroeger, when he co-helmed Nickelback's 2014 No Fixed Address album.
  • Directed by Elliott Lester, the gothic video depicts the destructive story of a hellish relationship. Lavigne rocks various dramatic gowns as she wanders alone through a graveyard and encounters a mysterious man - presumably Lucifer himself - in the forest.
  • Avril Lavigne wrote the song's hook downstairs at the piano and then went to bed. "One night I couldn't sleep. It's like three in the morning. I went into my studio on a keyboard and all lyrics for those verses came out," she recalled to American Songwriter.
