Album: The Bride (2016)
Play Video

Songfacts®:

  • This is the first single from The Bride, a concept album that tells the tragic story of a woman who loses her fiancé to a car crash on the day of their wedding. Devastated, she speeds off in the honeymoon car and embarks on a dusty road trip of self-discovery.

Bat For Lashes (aka Natasha Khan) explained to The Guardian: "To me, this is the hero's journey of realizing that you have to love yourself before you love someone else. We've got to a place where everyone is just waiting for the [next] best thing to come along. I'm guilty of that, too, but is that 'best thing' just an illusion?"
  • Co-directed by the singer with John De Menil, the video captures the aftermath of this life-altering accident as we see the widow (played by Natasha Khan) visit her fiancé's grave out in the middle of the California desert.
