Songfacts®:

  • "Last Hurrah" is an ode to those bad habits that we just can't give up.

I know I've said it all before
But it won't hurt to do it all once more

Rexha explained she's not just singing about smoking or drinking, she's also referencing addictions to love, food and other things. "It's our final anthem to all our vices as we seek a new tomorrow and a better us," she added. "And then do it all again tomorrow."
  • The lyrics were inspired by one of the song's co-writers, Lauren Christy, ate a piece of chocolate cake even though she was supposed to be on a diet. When Christy's husband asked her why she was indulging in such a calorific confection she responded: "Babe, this is my last hurrah."
  • Bebe Rexha performed the song for the first time on ABC's Live with Kelly and Ryan on February 25, 2019, the morning after the Academy Awards. She sung it live from the Oscars stage clad in her "Last Hurrah" signature angel wings costume.
  • The racy video finds Rexha going from angel mode to devil mode. It drew criticism for its juxtaposition of religious symbols and sexual images. Rexha was unapologetic for the visual, writing on social media:

"I'm not gonna be made to feel bad about making ART. And yes art to me is my beautiful ass out, boys kissing boys, girls kissing girls, crosses on my body. IF A MALE RAPPER PUT OUT THAT VIDEO OUT IT WOULD BE FINE.

The only person I would apologize to for this video is God if I offended him in any way. But I wrote this song with a pure heart. And wanted to portray how we are all fighting our temptations. No one is perfect. That's why we turn to God. God created sex. And I like sex."
  • Rexha told ABC radio it was director Joseph Kahn's initial idea to push the boundaries on the video. "He said, 'If I'm gonna work with you… I wanna work with somebody who's gonna do something edgier and take risks,'" she explained. "So I was like, 'OK, I'm down.'"
