Betty Davis was an American singer, songwriter, and model. She was known for her controversial sexually oriented lyrics and performance style.
She was born Betty Gray Mabry in Durham, North Carolina. As a child, she was introduced to various blues musicians by her grandmother, Beulah Blackwell, while staying at her farm in Reidsville.
She started writing songs from a young age and composed her first song, "I'm Gonna Bake That Cake of Love," at 12.
Davis moved to New York City when she was 16 and enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Technology while living with her aunt. She associated herself with frequenters of the Cellar, a hip uptown club where the young and stylish congregated. Among the musicians she met were Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone.
She was married to jazz legend Miles Davis for a year in the late 1960s. Davis also dated South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela and English guitarist Eric Clapton.
Davis worked as a model, appearing in photo spreads in Seventeen, Ebony, and Glamour. She was also the featured model on the front cover of Miles Davis' 1968 album Filles de Kilimanjaro.
In the early '70s, after a stint of modeling in the UK, she returned to the US to record her own music. In 1973, she released her self-titled debut album, Betty Davis, which showcased her raw and powerful vocals, funky grooves, and sexually suggestive lyrics.
Her music, blending rock, funk, and soul with explicit lyrics and sexually aggressive stage persona, was considered too racy for mainstream radio and television in the 1970s. She released four studio albums between 1973 and 1979, which were critically acclaimed but commercially unsuccessful.
Two singles were minor hits on the Billboard R&B chart: "If I'm In Luck I Might Get Picked Up," which peaked at #66 in 1973, and "Shut Off the Lights," which reached #97 in 1975.
Davis passed away on February 9, 2022, aged 77. Although Betty Davis never achieved mainstream recognition during her lifetime, her music and groundbreaking spirit have gained increasing appreciation in recent years. Her influence on artists like Prince, Janelle Monáe and Beyoncé is undeniable.
