Songfacts®:

  • Big K.R.I.T. and J. Cole have long been friends. "Prove It" marks their third collaboration, following DJ Khaled's August 2012 track, "They Ready," and Trae The Truth's August 2012 cut, "I'm On 2.0."
  • During his verse, Cole recalls the first time he became aware of Big K.R.I.T.

Been feelin' your s--t since Felton put me on
I put him on Dot, he put me on K.R.I.T.

Cole explains that it was his friend and Dreamville senior creative Felton Brown who turned him onto K.R.I.T. He introduced California rapper Kendrick Lamar to Brown around the same time. ("K Dot" was Lamar's stage name at the beginning of his career).
  • "Prove It" was produced by WOLFE de MÇHLS, who also sings the hook. He previously made a similar contribution to Big K.R.I.T.'s 2015 It's Better This Way track "In the Darkness."
  • The song was likely laid down during the recording sessions for the J. Cole curated Revenge of the Dreamers III album, which took place in Atlanta in early 2019. The rap label revealed on social media that K.R.I.T. was in the recording studio, despite not receiving a formal invitation.
