Songfacts®:

  • Lucy Dacus, Julien Baker, and Phoebe Bridgers were already famous individually when they formed Boygenius, and all three women found the glare of the spotlight a little too harsh. "Bite The Hand," the opening track of their 2018 self-titled EP, is a reminder that they don't have to sacrifice their own needs to give the fans what they want. Dacus told The Creative Independent in 2019:

"This song is about remembering fans don't have the right to come up and touch you. They don't have the right to have photos if you're in a bad head space. You don't have to have a one-on-one therapy session with people after the show. Even if everyone has the best intentions, they don't understand how taxing that can be, or the depths of emotion that requires after you've already done a show, which is depleting of your energy in the first place. It's not only a reminder to each other, it's a reminder that we need to be true to ourselves."
  • The title derives from the old adage, "Don't bite the hand that feeds you," which is a warning to be grateful to those who help you. But it's okay to nip at the hand that wants too much in return, says Dacus, "aka not feeling beholden to people that give you money."
  • Bridgers had the idea to get matching tattoos as a way to commemorate the song and keep its lesson close at hand. They each got a tooth on their wrist and showed off the ink on the cover of their 2023 album, The Record.
  • This was used in the 2023 horror movie The Boogeyman. It also showed up in these TV series:

The Buccaneers ("Wedding Of The Season" - 2023)
The Rookie ("The Shake Up" - 2019)
    Trinkets ("Big Mistake" - 2019)
