Songfacts®:

  • Boygenius recorded this breezy rock track for their debut full-length album, The Record. We hear the trio warn their respective romantic partners they're "not strong enough" to support them. According to press materials, the song is about "paradoxically experiencing self-hatred while having a God complex."
  • In the opening verse, Bridgers delves into a state of self-disgust, berating herself for being too idle to tinker with digital clocks.

The first chorus, featuring Baker, draws inspiration from Sheryl Crow's 1993 track "Strong Enough."

    The way I am
Not strong enough to be your man

Bridgers elaborated to Rolling Stone that the lyrics explore the dichotomy of the two wolves inside us: self-hatred and self-aggrandizement. She can't be the partner her lover wants her to be, feeling too messed up to show up for them. "Self-hatred is a god complex sometimes, where you think you're the most f---ed-up person who's ever lived," she explained. "Straight up, you're not. And it can make people behave really selfishly, and I love each of our interpretations of that concept."

Julien Baker added, "That's another example of Phoebe taking a wordplay and then extrapolating it to a really nuanced concept."
  • Baker takes over the second verse, envisioning herself racing around Los Angeles while blasting The Cure.

    Drag racing through the canyon
    Singing "Boys Don't Cry"
Do you see us getting scraped up off the pavement?

Despite the apparent fun Baker is having, she fears something terrible is about to happen.
  • Dacus has a moment where she admits she's not a deity, but she sings the line in a way that implies it's not a negative realization.

Always an angel, never a god
Always an angel, never a god

The band consistently explores the theme that women are undervalued simply because of their gender. Men are depicted as god-like beings occupying the highest echelon of the spiritual hierarchy, while women are relegated to inferior angelic roles. In fact, their band name, "boygenius," satirizes the common practice of excessively praising men.
  • "Not Strong Enough" ends with Dacus leading the final chorus. By going solo, she indicates she may be moving towards a greater understanding.
  • The song started when Phoebe Bridgers started riffing on the idea of the conflicted emotions of self-loathing and narcissism. "We're like how fun would it be to write like The Cure, Slash, The Killers pop song about feeling both self-hatred and God complex," she told BBC Radio 1's Claro Amfo.
  • "Not Strong Enough" is the most collaborative track on The Record. "That song was written more in the room together," Julien Baker confirmed. "Some of the other songs were like, 'Hey, I wrote this complete song'. And it would be cool if we added these little parts and then we like polished it in the studio, but this song felt very much like a group project."
  • The Boygenius trio directed the video themselves. It shows Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus having a fun day in Southern California. During their day out they visit an amusement park, art museum, and mini-golf course before ending it with a bonfire on the beach.
  • Boygenius reunited for their first live performance since 2018 at the Tibet House Benefit concert on March 1, 2023. They debuted "Not Strong Enough" and another song from The Record, "Cool About It."
  • The song became Boygenius' first #1 on a Billboard songs chart when it climbed to the top of the Adult Alternative Airplay tally dated June 3, 2023. It also marked the first trip to the summit for each member of the three-piece band.
  • Boygenius performed "Not Strong Enough" along with "Satanist" on the November 11, 2023, episode of Saturday Night Live. It marked their musical guest debut on the sketch show, although Phoebe Bridgers appeared on SNL in 2021 as a solo artist, when she memorably smashed her guitar against a monitor after her performance.
  • "Not Strong Enough" won the Grammy Awards for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance at the Grammy Awards in 2024. The Record picked up the award for Best Alternative Music Album.

Phoebe Bridgers also won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for her SZA collaboration "Ghost In The Machine," making her the most-awarded person of the night with four trophies.
