Songfacts®:

  • This song is about a guy who was cheated on by his girlfriend. He calls her Medusa not because she is physically ugly but her personality is ugly. He is showing how much she hurt him but he doesn't care anymore because she was mean. He also says that every time she cheated on him he got a little more famous. >>>

  • "(I Used To Make Out With) Medusa" reflects the shock-value approach that defined Bring Me The Horizon's earliest material. The song's lyrics include some of the band's most confrontational insults, something frontman Oli Sykes now views as a product of the extreme death metal bands that inspired them at the time.

"I guess at the time we were inspired by bands like Cannibal Corpse and Suffocation," Sykes told Metal Hammer in 2026. "So it was just, 'What's the most evil, messed-up thing we can say?'"
  • Looking back while revisiting the track for Count Your Blessings | Repented, Sykes realized there was more beneath the aggression than he had originally appreciated. He said the song captures the emotional strain of spending long periods on tour, separated from family and loved ones, with the anger masking feelings of loneliness and frustration.

Sykes also acknowledged that some lyrics could be interpreted as misogynistic, saying they no longer reflect the values or perspective he brings to his songwriting. The comments illustrate how both he and the band have evolved since their early years, moving away from provocation for its own sake toward more nuanced and introspective lyric writing.
