Songfacts®:

  • "Imaginary Playerz" is a swagger-soaked song where Cardi B celebrates her dominance unapologetically, both in rap and fashion. She boasts she's the real deal - a Bronx legend.
  • The title samples and builds on Jay-Z's 1997 cut "Imaginary Players," which calls out fake "players"; those who puff up their success and status but have little to back it up. Cardi takes the baton and runs with it, using the concept to highlight her earned position in hip-hop. Although she never actually says the words "Imaginary Playerz" in the lyrics, the meaning is stitched. It's her way of saying: "I'm the real player; you're just a hologram."

Cardi said her choice of sample is "a calm flex," connecting her journey with Jay-Z's original critique of fraudulent behavior in rap culture.
  • Cardi made sure to get Jay-Z's seal of approval. On X, she revealed:

"I was so happy because you guys understand, the song is kinda long... This song is like a staple for me and I had to get it approved by the one and only."

"If he didn't approve it, I probably wouldn't even feel a certain type of way... maybe I just had to come a little bit harder. But I'm glad that I came hard and he loved it."
  • DJ SwanQo produced the track along with Sean Island and OctaneThisThatGas. SwanQo, a Beacon, New York producer, has been a key part of Cardi's career, working on early tracks like "Washpoppin" and smash hits such as "Up" and "Bongos."
  • The cinematic music video, co-directed by Cardi and longtime creative partner Patience Foster, is a visual flex to match the audio. Cardi shows off her opulent taste by hopping on a private jet to Paris, soaking in yacht life, and reminding the world why she's not just a rapper, she's a lifestyle.
  • Cardi B found the spark for "Imaginary Playerz" in an unlikely moment: exhausted, heavily pregnant, and slumped on a studio couch in the summer of 2023. "I was really, really sad. I felt big, pregnant, f---ed up, wig coming off," she told Apple Music. Her engineer tried to snap her out of it and, at one in the afternoon, put on Jay-Z's 1997 classic "Imaginary Player."

The opening notes instantly changed her mood. The song carried her back to childhood summers in New York, when her uncle Jeffrey - "a cute pretty boy, drug dealer boy" - would blast it on her grandmother's block in the Bronx. "Some songs, it's weird to say, but they have a feel and a smell. I could really smell summertime, my grandma's block," she recalled.

That memory became the seed for her own track. Cardi flipped the original into a female-centered response, pulling in inspiration from Brooklyn's scammer culture, her own rise, and the lifestyle details that fans either admire or envy.
