Songfacts®:

  • In this song, Cat Power makes the tough choice to leave her man. She still loves him, but thinks it's the right thing thing to do because they're just not good together.

The song cuts to the crux of what destroys so many promising relationships. "I think it's the disconnection between men and women with each other which is the reason for problem marriages, abused children, neglected love, mistrust, lies, and infidelity," Power explained in the book Twenty. "That missed connection is why 'Good Woman' was written."
  • Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam joins Cat Power on this song, offering the background vocals that put him in character as the guy she's leaving behind. "Having Eddie sing on the track really helped show the flip side of what's important about men and women in relationships," Power said.

Vedder appears on another song from the You Are Free album as well, "Evolution."
  • Warren Ellis, known for his collaborations with Nick Cave, played violin on this song.
