Songfacts®:

  • Nile Rodgers rebooted Chic in 2015 with the single "I'll Be There." In 2018, the group released an album called It's About Time with "I Dance My Dance," a song about a familiar Chic topic: dancing. But it's not just dancing, it's also about individuality and liberation. We should all dance our dance.
  • The singers on this track are Kimberly Davis and Folami Ankoanda-Thompson, the frontwomen of Chic. Nile Rodgers produced it with his bass player Jerry Barnes and keyboard man Russell Graham. Rodgers and Barnes wrote it with two additional songwriters: Alex Forbes and Melissa Sanley. When Forbes was a guest on the Songfacts Podcast, she explained how it came together:

"That one started out with three of us: Melissa Sanley, Jerry Barnes and myself. We had the concept, we had the title. We had this idea of it being about individuality and the freedom to express yourself completely and not let other people's judgments get in the way. It's this idea of walking down the street and doing your own thing, being an individual. A bit of a fearless vibe."
