Songfacts®:

  • After several years without being able to follow up his 1962 hit "Let's Dance," Herb Alpert who had signed Chris Montez to his A&M record label, suggested to the Hispanic-American rocker that he should record easy-going middle of the road songs, rather than rock & roll. Montez wasn't happy with the idea, but went along with it. He was pleased he'd gone with his label boss' advice as he revived his career in 1966 with this Alpert-produced cover of a 1945 song, which was an international hit along with three other American top 40 entries.
  • Written by Harry Warren and Mack Gordon, the song was originally recorded by crooner Dick Haymes in 1945, and was featured in the 1945 Betty Grable and Phil Silvers film Billy Rose's Diamond Horseshoe.
  • Other films the song has featured in include Frantic (1988) and Off & Running (1991).
  • Many other artists have recorded this song including Count Basie, Nat King Cole, Doris Day, Duke Ellington and Sarah Vaughan.
