Songfacts®:

  • One of the first tracks that Chvrches recorded for Love Is Dead with producer Greg Kurstin, "Never Say Die" is one of singer Lauren Mayberry's favorite songs on the album. She explained this is "because it really leans into the juxtaposition of what we do—the mixture between the dark and the light."

Mayberry added that the song is, "melodic and direct but uses some of the gnarliest sounds we’ve ever tried."
  • That's a barely recognisable Lauren Mayberry who repeats throughout the song, "Didn't you say that?" According to Chvrches, her voice was "processed in a weird way."
  • Both of the Chvrches first two albums were named after lyrics from certain songs, but for their third record, Mayberry came up with a phrase that sums up the story she wanted to tell.

"It was supposed to be a little jarring. And I don't get up every day and agree with [the phrase] every single day, but f---ing some days I do," she told Billboard of the Love Is Dead title. "It's supposed to be a starting point for the conversation that happens across the record. Somebody is trying to figure out why they feel the way they do and you don't necessarily have an answer, but you're trying to wade through that frustration and confusion - and what do you do with all that once you know."
