• "Roses" is a dark, industrial-sounding slice of social commentary where Chvrches singer Lauren Mayberry takes aim at how Britain's long-standing social ills - nationalism, inequality and misogyny - keep repeating instead of resolving.
• The chorus interpolates the traditional English nursery rhyme "Ring a Ring o' Roses" (better known in the US as "Ring Around the Rosie"). While historians dispute the popular claim that the rhyme originated during the Great Plague of London or the Black Death, Mayberry uses it to signal recurrence: old sicknesses coming back around, whether bodily or societal.
• Mayberry wrote "Roses" with Chvrches bandmates Iain Cook and Martin Doherty, along with Jonny Scott. Scott has served as the group's touring drummer and percussionist since 2018, effectively becoming their unofficial fourth member.
• The band did not start with a title or a fixed concept. Instead, Mayberry arrived at the opening line, "A woman is a woman even if you want her dead," and built out from there. The rest of the song "snowballed" from that initial thought into what she described as "this little world around it." As Mayberry noted, one of the best surprises of songwriting is discovering where your subconscious takes you: "Oh, didn't know we were going there, but I guess we are."
• The musical foundation came together almost by accident while experimenting with handheld, battery-powered samplers and tape machines. The very first sound on the track is a pitched and warped sample of Mayberry's voice. "It's just like you throw something down like that," said Cook, "and then as Lauren says, everything kind of builds and snowballs from there," yielding a full track in just a couple of hours.
• Mayberry gets even more direct on the bridge, delivering her lines in a spoken rap cadence. She targets the habit of scapegoating marginalized groups to preserve traditional hierarchies. When she brought the bridge to the studio, Doherty's instinct was to fire up 808 drum machines and steer the arrangement toward a trip-hop, Bristol-inspired beat. "Let's remind people that we are Chvrches," he said.
• Released September 22, 2026, "Roses" was Chvrches' first new music since 2021's Screen Violence. While that album leaned into horror-inspired synth-pop, "Roses" pushes the group toward heavier, darker industrial textures. It was the first track written after reuniting for their fifth album, serving as both a fresh start and a statement of intent.
• Doherty described the writing sessions as an outlet for three years of pent-up energy, which is why the group chose "Roses" to launch their return. Instead of easing back in with the bright, melodic synth-pop that made "The Mother We Share" a breakthrough hit, they led with an aggressive track tackling deep-seated societal issues.
• The lyric video was directed by Harv Frost, best known for his visual work for The Last Dinner Party. Sporting a new goth-influenced aesthetic, Mayberry performs alongside a crashed car and a suit of medieval armor, a striking contrast between modern collapse and ancient British history.
