Songfacts®:

  • This uplifting song about the beneficent spirit of children was written by Crowded House leader Neil Finn. It starts:

Every child is a mystic having visions
    Of a new dawn

The song was inspired by kids in Tanzania and Kenya who were helped by So They Can, an international organization helping kids who are living poverty. Their campaign at the time was "One In A Million," an effort to get a million people to donate $1 every month to help eradicate child poverty. Finn slipped this line into the lyrics:

Be the one in a million that could lift the sun
    Up and over the horizon
  • Crowded House released an early version "Oh Hi" in 2022 to soundtrack a video showing children from two schools helped by the So They Can foundation. "The kids were hearing the song for the first time and dancing to it," Neil Finn wrote on his website. "It makes me feel very hopeful watching them."
  • Released in February 2024, "Oh Hi" was the first new Crowded House release since their 2021 album Dreamers Are Waiting. The group toured in 2023 and had another one lined up when they released the song. By this time, Neil Finn's sons Liam and Elroy were in the band.
  • "Oh Hi" is the lead single from Crowded House's eighth studio album, Gravity Stairs. The album is their first release under their new label BMG.
  • The album title itself draws inspiration from a heavy set of stone stairs near Neil Finn's vacation spot. "It's a metaphor for getting a little older and becoming aware of your own mortality, your own physicality," he explained. "Things are getting a little harder, and there's more determination needed to get to the top, but there's still the same compulsion to climb them."
