  • Bulgaria had never won the Eurovision Song Contest until 2026, when Dara showed up with "Bangaranga" and absolutely owned the stage in Vienna, storming to the top of both the jury vote and the public televote.
  • The title "Bangaranga" comes from Jamaican patois, meaning "disturbance" or "uproar," though the song treats chaos less like a problem and more like an internal awakening. Rather than smashing the furniture, Dara reframes rebellion as release, a way of shedding expectations, quieting self-doubt, and embracing emotional extremes without flinching. The chorus, "Bangaranga, bangaranga," functions as a chant-like alter ego, a sonic signature of confidence.
  • Dara linked the song's spirit to Bulgaria's ancient kukeri ritual, where performers dress in fur, bells, and animal masks to make an almighty racket and scare off evil spirits. It's essentially noise with purpose, a kind of organized chaos.

"It is noise and fire and rhythm deployed as a force for good, to chase away whatever darkness has settled, to shake the room back to life," Dara told The Independent. "'Bangaranga' is a riot, but it's a happy one. An invitation, not a threat."
  • For all its volume, the song is rooted in something personal. "'Bangaranga' is this inner feeling that everything is going to be alright and that everything is possible," Dara told BBC Radio 2. "I've been having a battle with anxiety, and one thing that helped me is having this inner conversation with myself and asking myself, 'What's my value?' I've found that being who you are and being authentic to who you are is the most powerful thing."

"I think everyone can awaken this feeling," she added.
  • Dara wrote "Bangaranga" with Anne Judith Stokke Wik, Dimitris Kontopoulos and Cristian Tarcea (known as Monoir), with Monoir serving as lead producer and Kontopoulos as co-producer.

Anne Judith Wik is a Norwegian songwriter and producer based in Trondheim, best known internationally as a founding member of the K-pop powerhouse songwriting collective Dsign Music. She has written songs for AleXa, Minseo and E-Girls.

Dimitris Kontopoulos is a Greek composer and producer who studied film scoring at USC Los Angeles. He is one of Eurovision's most celebrated behind-the-scenes figures, having co-written and produced previous entries for a range of Eastern European countries. This is his first winning composition, though he previously came second with "Shady Lady," performed by Ani Lorak for Ukraine in 2008 and "Hold Me," performed by Farid Mammadov for Azerbaijan in 2013.

Monoir (Cristian Nicolae Tarcea) is a Romanian record producer, songwriter, and DJ. Based in Constanta, Romania. He is the founder of Thrace Music Company.
  • The high-energy electronic anthem, infused with Bulgarian folk influences, became the breakout performance of the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest. Dara's live performance featured dancers in masks representing the demons within, a direct visual callback to the kukeri ritual at the song's heart. It won with a total of 516 points; 204 from the juries (1st place) and 312 from the televote (1st place).
