David Gilmour's lyrics for this song are about his hopes and fears for his children. He commented to Mojo: "It's a hard thing to try to write something that means something to you. Reflecting an idea of what you want and hope, for your kids, and to try to not become mawkish or hectoring."
"(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding" was written by Nick Lowe in 1974. The original version with his group Brinsley Schwarz was kind of somber, but Elvis Costello made it a classic with his 1978 uptempo take.
