Songfacts®:

  • For Dexys lead singer Kevin Rowland, true strength lies in embracing one's true self, regardless of societal expectations. This song is a reminder that masculinity is not defined by suppressing emotions or conforming to rigid stereotypes. It is about authenticity, vulnerability, and the courage to be true to oneself.
  • Rowland wrote the song with original Dexy's trombonist Big Jim Paterson in the early 1990s with the title "Manhood." They performed it live on UK's Channel 4 in 1993, and a decade later recorded it for Let's Make This Precious: The Best of Dexys Midnight Runners.
  • The reworked song is the second track on Dexys' sixth album, The Feminine Divine. "I felt we could get that song better and I could say something new with it," Rowland told Mojo magazine. "(The album) is about women and it's about masculinity and to some extent, femininity. It's a journey."
