Songfacts®:

  • With a lyric by Ronnie James Dio, "Invisible" is a song about going within yourself to deal with trauma. He introduces two characters in the song before bringing it into the first person, explaining the challenges that have come from his personal journey.

Dio explained: "It was written about three different people: a gay young man, an abused girl, and me. I wanted to write the song from a standpoint of someone who had been injured psychologically, and that happened in the case of the gay boy and the young girl, always being put-upon, kicked and shoved around for not being what people expect them to be. I included myself in the last part of it because I've spent all my life on the stage, and have had a lot of trauma. I felt I deserved to be included in that because of what most musicians have had to go through in their lives.

But the whole answer to it is, you can just become invisible. You can escape those kind of things because you have a mind that will let you do that. I don't mean escape them forever, but when people do that to you, why do you want to stand there and have the arrows and stones thrown at you? Just become invisible. I really like the attitude of the song."
  • Dio formed when lead singer Ronnie James Dio and drummer Vinny Appice left Black Sabbath, joining forces with bass player Jimmy Bain and guitarist Viv Campbell. Appice, Campbell, and Dio are the credited writers on "Invisible," which is on the tracklist to their first album, Holy Diver.
