Songfacts®:

  • This was written by country music songwriter Even Stevens, who came recommended by Shel Silverstein, a prolific author who wrote Dr. Hook's hits "Cover Of The Rolling Stone" and "Sylvia's Mother."
  • The group had two primary vocalists. The plan was to have Ray Sawyer (the one with the eye patch) sing lead on this track, but their other singer, Dennis Locorriere, recorded the guide vocal. Sawyer spent some time with the demo learning the song, and decided that the song was better suited for Dennis, so it was Locorriere who sang lead.
  • In 1979, Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show re-released their 1976 album A Little Bit More with this track included.

  • Mike from Norwalk, CtThis song is like alot of songs from when I was a kid. Don't even realize what you're singing. Imagine todays kids with people like lady gaga?? OMG. Lyrics are SO important, even more important than the music!!!!!
  • Mark from Byrdstown, Tn"When youre in love with a beautiful woman, its hard"---I mean come on its one of the greatest double meaning song lyrics ever!
  • Cyberpope from Richmond, CanadaI'm a bit sad -- had the refrain in my head ("when you're in love with a beautiful woman", because I am, so loked it up, read the full lyrics, & it's not exactly a love song -- it's kind of threatening to be hyper-jealous! But, yeah, I know, when you're talking to a hot woman, you have NO friends, only c*ck-blockers &/or opportunists! :P It's a tough world ... "when you're in love with a beautiful woman". . . *LOL*
  • Mike from Hueytown , AlIve always like this song..a lot of truth to it. Good sing along song
