During a conversation that Swedish shoe polish salesman William Hamilton had with the owner of Strom shoe shop in 1960, he discovered the paper bags given to customers to carry home their shoes were falling apart. Hamilton persuaded Swedish plastics manufacturer Akerlund & Rausing to make plastic carriers for Strom's shoes. These were the first plastic bags.
