Songfacts®:

  • This Drake freestyle is a track on his manager and OVO Sound co-founder Oliver El-Khatib's compilation El-Kuumba Tape Vol. 1. The project is a collaboration with the Japanese retailer Kuumba International.

Drake later included the song on his Dark Lane Demo Tapes mixtape, a compilation of previously released tracks, a couple of cuts leaked on the internet, as well as a slate of fresh material.
  • During his paranoid verse, Drake sends shots at his opposition and warns off pretentious women. He also addresses his on-again, off-again conflict with The Weeknd. The two Toronto stars have had a rocky history with a rumored beef dating back to 2011.

We just had to fix things, family, six tings, we can't split up

In November 2019, Drake re-followed Abel on Instagram, indicating the pair have cleared the air.
  • Drake raps over an instrumental by AXL Beats, who is a British producer from London. AXL Beats is known for his UK drill production; "War" finds the OVO leader revisiting a similar UK drill-inspired flow to the one he used on his 2018 freestyle, "Behind Barz."
  • The video, directed by Drake's photographer Theo Skudra, features the Toronto MC out on the ski slopes with various members of his OVO crew.
