Songfacts®:

  • Drake grew up on Weston Road in Toronto. It runs from Keele Street and St. Clair Avenue up to York Region in a rougher part of the city. The OVO leader reflects here on his humble beginnings, "back when we couldn't buy pizza cause we were down to pennies," and his come-up. He tells us how much hard work he put in to become the star that he now is.
  • Drake raps his freeflow rhymes over a continuous hazy sample of Mary J Blige's 1994 "Mary's Joint." This isn't the first time Drake and the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul's voices have been heard together. In 2009, Dreezy guested on MJB's "The One" from her Stronger With Each Tear album. The following year the pair hooked up again to perform "Fancy" together at the MTV Awards.
  • Drake's rhymes for Views include several plays on words on the names of other artists. He namechecks here Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas of the group TLC:

Creepin' like Chilli without the tender, love, and care
No tender love and care and no love and affection

The reference here is to TLC's 1994 single, "Creep."
  • Drake concludes his flow by quoting fellow Ontario rapper Jelleestone, as he sings the hook from his Canadian hit single "Money (Part 1)": "Money can't buy happiness. But I'm happiest when I can buy what I want. Get high when I want."
  • Drake shout outs NBA superstar Kevin Durant on this track:

A lot of people just hit me up when my name is mentioned
Shout out to KD we relate we get the same attention
It's rainin' money, Oklahoma City Thunder
The most successful rapper 35 and under

Durant explained to Genius that he regularly communicates with Drake. "When I have a game, he texts me or Snapchats me and we talk about stuff. I'm sure when he got in the booth, he was feeling it a little bit and put it in there," said the NBA star. "It went together nice. I guess he just wanted me to hear it as I was going through the album. Once I heard it, I was like, 'That was dope.'"

Shortly after the song was released, Durant left the Oklahoma City Thunder and signed with the Golden State Warriors as a free agent.
