Songfacts®:

  • Here, Dua Lipa sings about a boyfriend who was caught cheating on her. Asked by the BBC if it's a true story, she replied:

"Yes and no. Bits of it are very true. It's about this person that, a long time after you've broken up, comes back to say 'hi' and you think to yourself, 'What gives him the right to call me now and see how I'm doing? Does he not realize the damage he's done?'"
  • You probably figured this out, but the song title stands for "I Don't Give a F--k."
  • The song's visual was directed by Henry Scholfield with choreography by Marion Motin. The clip features two dueling Dua Lipas, each with her own army of dancers. The blue-clad Dua is her tough side, while pink Dua represents her softer side.

Lipa explained: "This video is about your stronger and weaker side fighting with each other only to realize that self-love is what will help you overcome any negativity that comes your way."

Scholfield added: "We wanted to embody the sense of empowerment in the track, whilst going beyond the literal breakup context. We had in mind a visual of the internal struggle, showing the two sides of Dua's emotive state, like an argument with someone you love. The strong Dua at first berating then eventually persuading her weaker alter ego that they both don't give a f--k."
  • Dua Lipa said the visual was "the toughest and most challenging video to film." She explained it took the team 22 hours to shoot the clip starting at 6 a.m. and finishing at 4 a.m. the day after.
  • Speaking to ABC Radio, Dua Lipa called this the "perfect breakup song." She explained: "[It's] kinda when you come out the other side of heartbreak, and you're past the point of caring. And it's kinda the perfect point when somebody comes back - somebody who's done you wrong, and really upset you and not treated you very nicely - for them to come back, it's quite a good feeling!"
